New York Water Tunnel
The Department of Environmental Protection financed the New York City Tunnel No. 3 project. The purpose, to build a third tunnel that would adhere to the first two; allowing New York City to have, by far, the most dependable water delivery system worldwide. The construction of Tunnel No. 3 will allow access to Tunnels, Nos. 1 & 2 for inspection and repairs, which haven’t been completed since the start of their use. The tunnel, beginning in Yonkers and ending in Queens, will ultimately stretch 60 miles, 450 to 800 feet below the surface. Schiavone Construction is one of the primary contractors involved in excavating Tunnel No. 3.

In 2002, Schiavone purchased four 15-ton locomotives from Brookville Equipment for the completion of this tunnel. An additional locomotive was ordered in 2003. These locomotives are equipped with a Deutz BF4M1013EC 158 HP 4-cylinder diesel engine.
