Los Angeles' Northeast Interceptor Sewer Project (NEIS) began in November 2004. A 5.5-mile long, 8-ft. ID tunnel is expected to be fully operational by Fall 2005. The Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering and Jacob’s Associates funded the 13’ diameter tunnel. Traylor Brothers in a joint venture with J.F. Shea, Kenny Construction, and Frontier Kemper was awarded the bid in May 2002.

CAL OSHA declared this one of the most hazardous tunneling jobs in California due to gassy areas, which were discovered in the tunnels vicinity; methane and hydrogen sulfide gasses. Brookville manufactured eight (8) battery powered, explosion-proof locomotives for Traylor Brothers for this project in Los Angeles. By utilizing a pneumatic system along with Ansul fire suppression techniques, the machines are able to endure these harmful conditions. All eight explosion-proof units were delivered in 2003.
